Benevento it is a very old city…nothing is older than Benevento!
E’ been affected by a series of events, from antiquity to the present day, starting from the name of the city.
It was an Ausonic city created long before the Samnite conquest. According to a legend, has arisen, by the hand of a son of Ulysses and Circe: Ausone O Diomede.
This is what E wrotedward Hutton in 1958 also reported in 1982 its “Benevento in the memories of Italian and foreign travelers” by Aniello Gentile.
Indeed, the first historical news, date back to the period of the Samnite wars, during which Benevento was a strong city able to discourage attacks by the Romans.
In 275 a. C., the Romans under the command of the consul Manlio Curio Dentato, defeated the re Pirro: and that's how the name gives MALEVENTUM was changed to Beneventum to witness the victory. In 268 a.C. the Romans set up their own colony.
Second, Raffaele Garrucci, the initial name of the city was in the language “osca“: Malies O Malocis then it became Maloenton (O Maloenta O Malowent). This hypothesis is based on the finding of two bronze coins: one of the fourth century. a.C. which bears the inscription “Malies” and another on the starboard with the head of a young man who is thought to be Apollo and the figure of an ox on the reverse.
According to another historian, Gianni Vergineo, instead, the original name is Greek: Maloenton (O Malaysia).
There is also a further hypothesis: according to the Romans, the original name of Benevento, is “bad results” but with the victory of Pirro of the 272 a.C. was transformed into “Beneventum” as if to wish good luck.
But there is also a fourth thesis which sees the origin of the name coming from’ animal symbol of Benevento: the toro (symbol of the Samnites). Indeed, the Greek poet Theocritus calls the bull Malon.
Air of the past recalls the ancient land of the Samnites, then colonized by Romans who renamed the ancient MALEVENTUM in Beneventum.
