Palace of the Superintendent of Syracuse – Piazza Duomo
The opening is scheduled for 18 April at 17.00. The exhibition opens to the public from 19 aprile.Dal 30 June 2019, the time is extended until 23.00.
The Crucifixion of St. Andrew is an oil on canvas (cm 202×152) Caravaggio painted in 1607, while in Naples. The scene depicts the saint in the time of his death, after having suffered martyrdom. The cross to which it is linked still has the Latin form, since that X, precisely the “S cross. Andrea”, It will become common only in the seventeenth century.
The work, after being a long time in Spain, from the 1976 It is preserved at the Museum of Cleveland and is “paid” in Syracuse, cities that hosted the Lombard genius early 1600. The artist has also painted another version of the scene, slightly smaller, that the currently-is kept in London. Similar works have been erroneously attributed to Caravaggio.
Next to this picture, is possbilie admire two works (normally on display in the museum of Messina Polo) Mario Minniti, painter Syracuse close friend of Caravaggio. It is “The Magdalene at the foot of the Cross” e “The Miracle of the widow of Naim”.
From 15 May, the exhibition is enriched by the exhibition “Caravaggio Experience” which takes place within the ipogeico path of Piazza Duomo, in front of the palace of the Superintendent, through projections, Virtual reality and sound suggestions.
The exhibition was curated by Pierluigi Carofalo and Nicola Barbatelli on behalf of "Sicily Museums" and is sponsored by the Sicilian Region and the City of Syracuse.
