The Feast of Maria Santissima della Bruna, protector of the city, celebrated on 2 July, can be considered, to all effects, Matera of the events icon. The cult of the Madonna della Bruna is very old, probably it dates from the tenth or eleventh century; the celebration of the feast, instead, It thinks back to a few centuries later, even before, then, Pope Urban VI to introduce, and Boniface IX, in 1389, deliberating the establishment of the liturgical feast of the Visitation for the day 2 July.
