Puglia: the traditions, events and excursions

Puglia and events a:

  • Calimera (The): famous for the rite of rebirth. Easter Monday, residents, meet in front of the church of San Vito, between dry stone walls and olive trees. At the center of the small church there is a perforated stone from which young and old pass by to remember the birth event and therefore the rebirth. Crossing the stone brings luck and fertility;
  • Martignano (The): nel cuore della Grecìa Salentina, during Holy Week, the peasants go to the houses of the villages or to the farms to sing the songs of the Living Passion in Greek language (dialect similar to the Greek brought to Salento by the first Greek colonists), dove si narra la storia di Gesù. The singing ends by eating one weather in puccia (typical Salento bread), cheese and eggs;
  • Weather in Francavilla Fontana (Br): the statues of the Mysteries they are made of papier-mâché and are carried in procession by seven brotherhoods. Behind the statue of the “Fall of Christ” they settle down 50 crosses that are dragged on the shoulders for “penance” by people (pappamusci) hooded and barefoot;
  • Erchie (Br): si festeggiano le Tables of San Giuseppe and on the second Thursday after Easter Santa Lucia;
  • Gal (Br): tourists will discover agricultural traditions and nature trails in the Messapian countryside among the olive trees. And in the various festivals, they will also savor tasty Brindisi artichokes and the Negroamaro (indigenous grape variety that represents Salento);
  • Nardò (The): l’Association of tour operators in Vignacastrisi, they propose every Saturday, excursions by bicycle or on foot along the country paths between dry stone walls and wild olive trees.
  • Oria (Br): the first procession begins on the first Thursday of March and continues until Holy Thursday, where the statue of dead Christ (adorned with white fabric flowers: symbol of spring and resurrection), it is brought from the church of the Benedictine nuns to the Cathedral. The palm Sunday, there is the Living Passion, with over 200 volunteers from the Oria human promotion group;
  • Mesagne (Br): do not miss a delicious stop in Mesagne, for the occasion of artichoke festival, that lasts 7 days with conferences, events, conferences and stops in typical restaurants to taste artichoke menus. E’ organized by Mesagne Land of Local Action Group.
