The Sant'Eustachio holiday is celebrated in Matera 20 September each year. The solemn mass is celebrated in the cathedral by the Archbishop, in the presence of civil authorities and members of the police forces together with the entire population. A votive lamp for those killed in wars is lit by the Mayor and peace in the world is invoked, the seeds are blessed to wish a good harvest next year. Once the mass is over, the procession begins through the streets of the city. The Archbishop together with the civil authorities and citizens walks the streets of the center with the effigy of Sant'Eustachio Martire. A wooden statue created by the artist Angelo Sperdicchio from Andria in 1799. A series of cultural activities take place during the celebrations, and events throughout the city center area. Concerts, craft markets, exhibitions and stands dedicated to the local gastronomic tradition. Finally, in the evening you can watch the fascinating fireworks show that takes place on the other side of the city, in front of the Sassi.
