The Fortress of Rectors is a charming Medieval castle, as evidenced by the ancient Lombard tower around which arose. Built for defensive purposes, It is situated at the highest point of the old town of Benevento and is also known as the Castle Manfredi, despite the Sicilian king has not even seen, or Benevento Castle. At the behest of Pope John XXII, the fortress was built in 1321, on the model of the great military constructions of Avignon and Carcassonne (France). The imposing building was built on the remains of a Lombard fortress-castle, built by Arechi II around all'875, over an ancient Roman arce dominating the way to Avellino. La Rocca received its present name in the Middle Ages, when it became the seat of Governors (rectors) priest.
