The imposing Aqueduct “Carolino” by Vanvitelli

The Aqueduct “Carolino”

L’Aqueduct “Carolino” it is a masterpiece in both style and technique of architecture. The place is in the province of Caserta, appointed in 1997 dall’Unesco World Heritage Site.

When the Aqueduct was built “Carolino”?

It is a construction, whose Aqueduct, brought water from the springs of Fizzo al Palace of the Royal Palace of Caserta.

This novelty gave the architect Vanvitelli the opportunity to make themselves known and to change their minds who did not believe that the water would reach the Royal Palace.

Instead deny these rumors, the water also reached Sant’Agata de’ Goths, a San Leucio, to mills, all fontane, all tanks…in short, to the whole Royal Palace but also to all of Caserta.

It also served to water the animals and irrigate the fields.

Background

The first section for the construction of the Aqueduct was placed between 1753 and the 1755: went from the sources of the Fizzo to Monte Ciesco. from il 1755 and the 1762 the Monte Croce ma, at this point, difficulties were found so much that it was decided to suspend the works. Later the Mount Castrone, the Monte Acquavivola, the Monte Sacristy, the Monte Proud, the Monte Fano, the Monte Durazzano and the Monte Longano.

following, l’Vanvitelli architect, reached the Monte Garzano through a bridge that crossed the valley between the two mountains.

The bridge was called “Bridges of the Valley” that, in those years, it was the longest bridge in all of Europe and its style resembled the Roman one, but with a very remarkable majesty.

But Vanvitelli decided that a bridge of that length was not enough and he also drilled the Monte Garzano. In 1759, re Charles of Bourbon, inaugurated the works.

The water made the “his first entry” from the hill of Briano and then “He flooded” all the other waterfalls in the garden of the Palace.

An occasion that also served as a greeting at the entrance of the Queen of Naples, Maria Carolina, to which the Aqueduct was also dedicated.

This masterpiece was the one that Arch. Vanvitelli: was his pride and all his collaborators led by Patturelli e Collecini.

The particularity of the Aqueduct

The part of Bridge of the Valley it is considered one of the greatest works in the world. Has triple bonds, 44 square upper pylons ending with a road almost two meters wide enclosed by two backs, the upper part forms the galleries and the red plaster with which it is whitewashed gives it a rustic but also harmonious air in spite of the gray color of the tuff.

All its greatness, perfection and genius testify to the greatness of Vanvitelli who, centuries later, is consecrated as the great genius of architecture: at the time he already knew his work and what the entire construction of the Aqueduct was to be and remain over time.
