Sicily is the region in Italy more full of sites with cultural and artistic heritage recognized as World Heritage. For here well we plan a total of seven sites 51 throughout Italy.
Let us now enter into the heart of our virtual tour starting from Agrigento, Here we find the famous monument of the Valley of the Temples. This site is the best example of artistic Doric temples of the Hellenistic period and perfectly preserves important examples of art and Greek culture.
We continue the tour going to Villa del Casale. Here the beautiful polychrome mosaics catapult us into Roman culture era. These are important ruins that represent the testimony of elegance and luxury of the life they led the Roman patricians.
Both the Odyssey that the Aeneid was devoted particular attention to the Aeolian Islands and the mighty God Aeolus to Ulysses encountered in his years of traveling far from his Ithaca. The steaming rocks described by Homer and Virgil are still a huge attraction for tourists keen to enjoy these views almost apocalyptic. Thanks to the active volcanoes Stromboli and Vulcano here's spectacular atmosphere. Nearby you can also reach several very special beaches with sand with the characteristic black derived from volcanic material. Most of these places are accessible only by boat: ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in wild nature.
By remaining still in theme volcanoes come now Etna, the highest volcano in Europe and one of the largest in the world with its height beyond 3300 meters. Around this giant is a natural valley is created, called Valle del Bove, where the remains of many flows that constantly threaten towns nearby. The intense volcanic activity is documented from about 3000 years and it is monitored by scholars.
Continuing with the other sites, eastern Sicily is strongly characterized by the Baroque style. The cities here are in fact rich in churches, palaces and fountains typical of the Baroque period. The Cathedral of Noto is one of the most representative examples of the era and is one of the finest testimonies of artistic genius of time.
Now we come to the Archeological Park of Syracuse and Pantalica. In this mysterious valley of the dead they were buried and then served as a veritable cemetery. Here are 5000 holes in the rock that have transformed the whole landscape of this canyon. All of these sites are a great testimony to the Mediterranean cultures over a period longer than three millennia. We find all the different influences of styles: greco, Roman and baroque inevitable.
We now come to the end of our tour: we are at the Arab-Norman Palermo that guards in a lofty style of Arab and Norman dominations. The cathedral of Monreale, Palermo Cathedral, The Paladina Chapel are just some of the examples better conserved mainly thanks to the fact that they have not suffered from the effects of natural disasters that have hit western Sicily.
